How Airway Dentistry Transformed My Practice

When I first began exploring dental airway concepts — from identifying tongue ties to incorporating appliances like the ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional) expander — I had no idea how profoundly it would change my practice. I was trained, like most dentists, to focus on teeth: straighten them, restore them, and keep them clean. But what I discovered was this: when you look beyond the teeth and begin to understand the function behind the smile — how a patient breathes, swallows, and sleeps — everything shifts.
Suddenly, I wasn’t just fixing cavities or crafting veneers. I was helping people eliminate chronic fatigue, TMJ pain, clenching, mouth breathing, and even behavioral challenges in kids. And as a result, I became not just their dentist, but someone who truly changed the quality of their life.
Creativity in Business
As the leader of one of the fastest-growing dental offices in the community, Sweeney is dedicated to keeping her patients smiling. She joined forces with Dr. Kevin Dickinson in 2020 and, since then, has brought on additional doctors to expand Savannah Dental’s technology and advanced service offerings as well as hours of operation. She is also adding a new location in Richmond Hill and working to become a certified Digital Smile Design (DSD) provider.

Surviving the Test of Time
When Dr. Stephanie Joy Sweeney was in high school, she worked for a retail store that was an example of how a great culture can drive growth and customer service. On the flip side of the coin, after dental school, she worked for dental offices that had a negative culture. Co-workers often hid in her office crying due to team relationship issues. She purchased Savannah Dental with the vision for creating a dental office with an amazing culture: A place where everyone enjoyed coming to work knowing that positivity will create a patient-centric dental office. Sweeney met Dickinson at a dental educational seminar and realized he had been striving for the same goals. He soon joined Savannah Dental, understanding that they can provide more for their patients together than alone.

The Dental Difference
With a goal to become the leading cosmetic luxury dental provider in the Savannah area, Dr. Stephanie Joy Sweeney wants patients to experience something different when they step into the doors of Savannah Dental.
“It’s a dental office inspired by a spa experience,” says Dr. Sweeney, who takes pride in how she presents her practice, by treating her patients with blankets, fruit-infused water and personalized Pandora stations upon their arrival. “Our patients will experience an unexpectedly high level of service, quality and comfort with total facial aesthetics.”
South Magazine’s Greatest Dentist
Savannah Dental strives to not just create a dental appointment, but a dental experience. Their modern approach to dental care focuses on building relationships with patients where they feel cared for and at home. Listening to patients’ wants and needs is crucial—for many patients, this means focusing on preventing dental issues, for others it is restoring damage that has already been sustained.
South’s Greatest Bosses
Dr. Stephanie Sweeney, a dental professional at Savannah Dental, maintains a team mentality on her staff as she says, “We would not be anything without our amazing team.” She believes a key element every great boss must have is letting the team do their job. Trying to micromanage your staff will make both you and your team fall into a frenzy. Being understanding of them and accepting that perfection is the enemy of good will be better overall for the group. Finally, Dr. Sweeney encourages her team to help each other and build one another up. This way, if the team is happy, then the patients are happy.
